6 Things Your Young Athlete Needs to Become the Best

6 things your young athlete needs to become the best

Many parents and coaches dream of seeing a young athlete reach their full potential. At SPMI we have found that there are 6 core components to achieving the highest level. Surprisingly, these same areas when developed are directly correlated to helping them succeed in the classroom and in life. While reading this article I challenge parents and athletes to rate each category from 1 to 10 to get a better understanding of how to maximize you or your young athlete’s full potential.

1. A World-Class Belief System
At the highest level, belief is everything. Young athletes must develop an internal narrative that says, “I can figure this out. I belong here.” This doesn’t mean blind confidence it means resilient confidence. The best athletes trust their preparation, embrace challenges, and view setbacks as part of the process rather than proof that they’re not good enough. With a world-class belief system, the best athletes believe that they can succeed no matter how tough the circumstances or how they performance recently.

2. Discipline
Motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what remains. Elite athletes consistently do the small things right. This means showing up on time, training with intention, prioritizing recovery, and making smart decisions off the field. Discipline is what turns potential into performance over time. This discipline pays performance dividends as athletes notice a powerful compounding effect over time as long as they stay committed throughout both good and bad times. At SPMI, we like to encourage athletes to favor consistency over intensity.

3. Ambition
To reach the highest levels, a young athlete must truly want it. Ambition is the internal drive that pushes them to go beyond what’s required. It’s choosing extra reps when no one is watching, seeking feedback, and constantly asking, “How can I get better?” Without ambition, even the most talented athletes’ plateau. But the question remains, how is ambition achieved? Is it something that is taught or discovered? No, ambition is something that must be developed. At SPMI we work on helping athletes develop and enhance their ambition.

4. An Unwavering Ability to Manage Pressure
As competition increases, so does pressure. The difference between good and great athletes often comes down to how they respond in high-stakes moments. Can they stay composed? Can they execute under stress? Pressure isn’t something to avoid. It’s something to train for. Athletes who learn to embrace pressure gain a powerful competitive edge. The greatest example for so many parents when seeing their young athlete compete is noticing the performance gap between practice and competition. The most mentally strong are athletes who are able to bridge the gap between how they practice and how they compete and in many cases their levels raise even more in competition. The best athletes love pressure and thrive off of it. At SPMI we extensively work on this area with many athletes providing a competitive edge and a more positive relationship with pressure.

5. A Great Team Around Them
No athlete succeeds alone. Behind every high performer is a strong support system: parents, coaches, trainers, and mentors who create an environment of accountability and growth. The right team reinforces positive habits, provides honest feedback, and helps the athlete stay grounded through both success and adversity.

6. Professional Mental Training
Physical training is expected. Mental training is often the missing piece. Skills like focus, confidence, emotional control, and resilience are not just traits, they are trainable. The best athletes in the world invest in their mental game just as much as their physical game. Developing these skills early can dramatically accelerate an athlete’s development and performance

At the end of the day, reaching the highest level isn’t about one breakthrough moment. It’s about consistently building the mindset and habits that support elite performance.

If you’re serious about helping your young athlete gain a competitive edge, mental training is one of the most powerful investments you can make.
